On behalf of all of us, I would like to welcome Kristoff and Antonio who have joined the Board of Directors of Vox Spectrum. They bring in valuable insights to our company from their number of years of experience in telecom consultancy across various geographies.
Since I set up Vox almost a decade ago, with the confidence of co-investors and all of you – my colleagues - who have helped us reach where we are today, I have been on a learning curve. Each day brings a new understanding, an idea or a new way to resolve a problem. However, subsequent to our association with Delta Partners, whose Private Equity Fund has concluded an investment in our company; I have been going through a very interesting phase of my life. Their collective wisdom in pursuing excellence has rubbed off on our way of thinking. Their telecom industry expertise enriches us. Their management tools add depth to our own risk-management methods. They are active investors and therefore take a hands-on approach to provide strategic and operational support.
Over the past few months we have realized that as a fresh investor, Delta brings in a different perspective to the understanding of the way Vox functions, which we may have overlooked or seem to have taken for granted. My reflections on this bring to mind the “Johari Window” concept on information processing by human beings. This was a tool created by American psychologists Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham (their first names – Joe & Harry – merged to become “Johari”), in 1955, to help people better understand their interpersonal communication and relationships. The key ideas behind this tool are that individuals can build trust amongst themselves by self-disclosure and that they can learn about themselves with the help of feedback from others.
As shown in the illustration, this model consists of a four-square grid, where on the X-axis the two halves plot what is known and NOT known to SELF while the Y-axis plots what is known and not known to OTHERS.
Hence, in Quadrant I (or Arena) we plot what is easily known about self, as known to others too. In the second Quadrant (Façade) self-disclosure on what is ONLY known to oneself, but not understood or known by others, gets plotted. The Blind Spot (Quadrant III) should be valued most by us, as this enhances our own knowledge of what we do not know about ourselves, through information provided by others. This is where Delta’s role has come to play an important part for Vox Spectrum. In our quest to grow we miss, occasionally, the obvious things that could have made our progress easier. As a specialist with thousands of man-years of experience in telecom advisory, Delta can reduce the size of our “blind spot” and help us improve ourselves. This can help us optimize our operations in our march towards our higher goals. (And by the way, help us reduce the size of the last quadrant to as small an area as possible!).
Delta’s teams would work with us to help us identify operational improvement areas. While we welcome them we also thank them for the value-add that they bring in. Through the past decade of this century Vox Spectrum and its group companies have been laying the groundwork for their future growth. As we move in to the next decade we are confident that we would continue our compounded annual growth rate of yesteryears. |
